Have you ever seen/read something that you're pretty sure is a joke, but you aren't sure, because it's something you actually heard people say. It seems too ridiculous to be true and it must be a joke, but on the other hand, people were actually saying things like that not too long ago, soo....

But I'm pretty sure joke.

My M/M romance, Clippings, is now on Amazon!

Here. (They say "it's out of print - limited availability", but that's because it's a POD book.)

[ETA: Hmm, some people who tried to buy it told me it's not available yet. Maybe we'll have to wait a few more days.]

I feel very uninteresting atm. I don't really have anything much to post about because most of what happens now is either boring, or I can't talk about it. I know, though, that retreating into my little cave altogether and cut myself off from people entirely is not going to make me feel any better at all.

Instead, I'll post a movie again.

But, I'm taking a break from the Whispering Corridors movies. I don't think anyone minds that. *hears sighs of relief* ;-) So, I'm offering you a Japanese thriller instead as an early xmas/holiday present. I'm broke so I can't send out cards, but I do have a pretty good internet connection, so I can upload stuff.

Sôseiji (Gemini)

Plot: "Yukio is living a charmed life: he is a respected young doctor with a successful practice and a beautiful wife. His only problem is that his wife is suffering from amnesia, and her past is unknown. Things begin to fall apart, however, when both his parents die suddenly, killed by a mysterious stranger with Yukio's face. Only when Yukio confronts this stranger will the mystery of his identity, and his wife's past, be revealed."

I liked this lot. It's more of a thriller than a horror movie, because it deals not at all in the supernatural, but rather with the darkness that resides inside people and the evil things that people do when desperate, as well as who is good and who is evil, and from what perspective?

It's rather surreal, but also beautiful. The director is Shinya Tsukamoto, who's apparently made some rather celebrated movies (the Tetsuo series, for example), has managed to set a very creepy atmosphere all through the movie. It's set in the early 1900's, and is probably not something to watch for the claustrophobic. This is definitely a movie that I will watch again.

Want to watch it? )

Anyone interested in some Asian gay-themed films? I mostly watch horror and thrillers, but I do have some of those too (despite being drama and/or romance).

During the champion interviews for the Snarry Games one of the questions we were asked was which characters did we find most challenging to draw. At the time I really hadn't tried to draw any of the other characters besides Snape and Harry, so I pretty much figured the rest were all going to be equally difficult. I was mistaken. Today's character is by far the most difficult one I've had to draw yet. I probably drew over thirty different versions of him, but decided this one most closely matched my vision of the character. I was going to leave him out of the countdown, but in the end, I decided I really had to include him. I'd welcome any concrit.

Subject: Well... it's been a long time since *that's* happened...
Security: Public

I haven't tripped the 'skeevy old perv' radar for a long time now. Generally I read outside the prey group for them, but I drew one today, and he was both obtuse, and immune to the 'gentle brush off'. It was kinda funny, in a sad sort of way, to find it happening today. Well... a sad, and 'I need to wash my hands now' sort of way, at least.

Went out hat hunting today -- unsuccesfully, although I did score some great resale items, and a ripping pair of naughty librarian shoes. No hat fit the bill though, alas. One of the hunting grounds one hits when one is looking for a hat to mutilate and remake into an 1830's Fascinator, is the ubiquitous Salvation Army store.

That's where my 'admirer' drew a bead on me, and then proceeded to follow me around the store, making idle chitchat, most of which involved asking dozens of questions about me -- most designed to lead him to pertinent predatory information, such as where I lived, and with whom, and whether I had any family nearby. You know, the sort of thing serial killers want to know. The funny thing was, he in no way *read* as dangerous. Hinky, sure. Skeevy, absolutely, and no way was I inclined to let him know where to come looking for me, but he didn't trip my Predator radar, and that's pretty well-honed these days, I must confess. He read as a lonely, slightly confused, slightly dazzled old man of limited means, and not much understanding of personal space, who wanted to talk to a girl that wasn't afraid to look him in the eye. And anyway, he kind of ran away when he learned that, instead of living in an apartment with female roommates, I was married. I shrugged and smirked a bit, and considered the encounter finished.

Until I passed him and his stinky cigar outside, on my way to the car. He came shuffling after me, calling more questions, and I decided to be polite to him, and indulge him in a bit more conversation. I realize, reading over the preceeding, that friends will be shaking their heads and calling me an idiot for stopping, but I haven't entirely set the scene aright; it was a bright, sunny day today. I was in full view of the store's entrance, and there were three men within fifty yards, loading donated clothing into a truck. Also, while the man was taller than I, and might have weighed just a bit more, he was palsied, slow, and had one hand occupied in hanging onto the natty rag of a cheroot he'd chewed nearly to pieces -- nobody who loves a cigar that thoroughly is going to drop it on the ground just for a chance grab. I was in no doubt of being able to defend myself, should I need to.

And really, I was more bemused by him than anything else... He asked some more leading questions; did I shop at this grocery store, did I live on a steep or a gentle hill, and suchlike. I gave vague and misleading answers, and let him chatter about other people he knew from various places, and pepper me with the occasional compliment. Asking if he could kiss me though, was where the line got drawn. Getting pushy about it and trying to insist that he kiss me on the mouth... well, that was a big ol "nuh UH!" I pushed him off, laughing to take the sting out of "dude, I don't even know you!" Then I patted him on the arm, said I needed to get going, and left.

So here's the brain-twist. I know that sociopaths pass -- that's how they survive, that's how they hide, and most of all, that's how they hunt. But I also know that part of that hunting parameter is based in a deep, instinctual perception of safe victim types. I haven't read 'victim' since I was 14, and the only place I have ever 'read' floozie, was at renfaires, when I was playing such. Even at burlesque, I never made myself available to the audience for grab-arse and chatting-up between acts. So he might have been just a lonely old man who asked hinky questions and didn't want to heed 'no,' he could have been a psycho with a taste for Tiger, but without the organization to plan his drop, or I could have another interesting encounter with him sometime in the future.

Based on my instincts, I'm going with the first notion. But rest assured, I'll let you know if he turns up again.
If he tries to kiss me again, I might need to take up a collection for bail money though.
I'm just sayin'.

It's not a full moon, is it? Because my kitten has been a MONSTER today. My right hand is swollen and sliced and bitten all to hell, and he's been banished to the bathroom 5 different times. And it takes 6 (or more) "no"s and scruff grabbing before that happens.

Also, exam tomorrow. Can not study. Have been angry and tense all day for no reason. Seriously, feels like the full moon.

Oof. I already have a few stories and art to rec from December fests, so I'd better post this first, as I've been meaning to do so for a few days here. Then we can get to the fest recs later in the week. But I will say that the first fest recs post will be from [info]snupin_santa, because there is some GOLD there already! I haven't seen anyone recc'ing stuff from there yet, so I definitely will be doing so. :)

But first, I got to rec Charlie/Draco at [info]crack_broom in November. The pairing might seem random, if you've never encountered it before, but I encourage you to give it a shot! The mix of rough-and-tumble dragon keeper and fussy aristocrat is actually quite compelling. :)

About half of these have been recc'ed in this journal before, but the other half are new. Links go to the more detailed rec at Crack Broom, which then has links to the actual stories/art. If you read/see something you like, go ahead and leave a few words of feedback! Even on older stories and art, people always appreciate it.

FIC:

Perfect Match by [info]florahart (C/D, NC-17, 5K, PWP & humour)
Charlie and Draco end up on a blind date together.

Lessons by [info]entrenous88 (C/D, NC-17: BDSM, 500 words, drama)
Draco apprentices to Charlie for a year.

Happy Camper by [info]indigo_kitti (C/D, NC-17: AU, 6K, humour)
Draco Malfoy, stranded among the barbaric inhabitants of the Romanian dragon reserve, is not a happy camper.

In the Land of Dragons by [info]megyal (C/D, NC-17: EWE, 10K, adventure, drama)
Charlie's job has changed from dragon-keeper to dragon-hunter in the apocalyptic aftermath of the war.

A Remedy to Boredom by [info]titti (C/D, NC-17, 25K, romance)
A potion forces Charlie and Draco to be together, to the frustration of family and friends.

Scratching the Surface by [info]iamshadow (C/D, R, 5K, drama)
Ten years after Voldemort's defeat, a young man comes to Charlie seeking help.

The Company of Other Wizards by [info]entrenous88 (C/D, Percy, Bill, R, 7K, humour, sort of gen)
Bill agrees that he and Charlie will talk to Percy about whether Percy prefers the company of other wizards; Charlie has his own ideas about how he'll spend his holiday.

Silk is Overrated by [info]florahart (C/D, NC-17, 2K, PWP)
From the prompt: Charlie taking Draco shopping for jeans. Dressing room sex. "We'll take it."

ART:

Trust me, just feel (love me) by [info]ships_harry (C/D, NWS)

Other places to find Charlie/Draco fic and art, if you're a fan of the pairing... check out the memories or masterlists of the major slash exchanges (or those that are coming up), as there are often one or two stories with this pairing in major fests. [info]pornish_pixies also has quite a few in their archive from several years ago, if you are a member with access to their locked posts, and communities like [info]weasleyworship and [info]flames_n_tats often have Charlie/Draco content. :)

Last night was my first time at the Signature Theater's new venue; the company spent ten years staging productions in a old garage before moving into the shiny new building complex next to a cinema that once had the best parking conditions in the area; now you can't park at all. It took some time. The company was on the second floor with a bar, a piano, a glass wall, a Christmas tree, and two blackbox theaters. It was opening night, and before the show began we spotted the director, Eric Shaeffer, watching, along with the choreographer and a couple of other important people. A member of the audience also fell ill during the first act, and they stopped the show so she could be carried out, which impressed my mom.
As a teenager I saw the original production in London, with, as mom noted several times last night, the rotating stage, which is really more of a pageant than anything else, especially when you're some way back in the audience. Obviously when you're doing a show like this in the more intimate blackbox major revamping is the order of the day. The set was minimalist, the costumes less fancy, and there was much less belting going on. Not that it was gone all together, if only because the actors playing Javert and Cosette had both played their roles on Broadway. With Cosette is mattered less, since the poor girl really isn't given much to do, but Javert brought an intensity to it that made me worry he would literally drown Valjean out during their confrontation. But Valjean knew what he was doing; he could play it more human than usual blackbox-style, and he could dial it up at the right point to strike our ears, or hold his own against Javert. Javert was also the one who noticed the ill audience member and called the stop to the show, and hearing his street voice was jarring. It was right before he sang "Stars," and we gave him quite the round of applause for that number. My parents and I also stood up for him during the bows; he was arguably the best of the show.
The idea of the show, I think, is to remove the detachment you normally get, and that worked. I teared up several times, particularly during "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables"(their Marius was also particularly good).
