I often end up discussing the Slytherin/Gryffindor dynamic in terms of pairings with friends. Different priorities, different perspectives, etc. It's one of the reasons I find Harry/Draco, Snarry, Ron/Draco, and Hermione/Draco so appealing. The built-in conflict is too delicious to resist. House rivalries, assumptions about and genuine characteristics of house members make for exciting relationship building, and this is without taking into account specific canon events surrounding particular characters. In AU fics, I adore James/Draco fics, but I do like stories that stick to the canon timeline, and while I've by no means exhausted my fic reading of the above mentioned pairings, I sometimes like to find other pairs to read that feature this type of pairing. And so, Remus/Draco it is!

Here are five Remus/Draco stories I've enjoyed. This pairing, especially in light of HBP, really lends itself to the hurt/comfort genre. Four of the five stories listed are hurt/comfort, and the characterizations, though varied from author to author, are plausible and fitting. When I was in school, one of my teachers was adamant about this idea: knowing an author's history is the best way to appreciate his or her work. I always disagreed. I bring my own experience to the text. But anyway, never mind that. I wish I didn't know a damn thing about Orson Scott Card. Even though I don't know his life history, I know enough about his beliefs to guarantee I'll never appreciate 'Ender's Game' again. Which sucks. Because I love that book. But now I despise the author.

I know Card's bigotry isn't new news, but this latest article I read is just depressing. How can the mind that created 'Ender's Game' be so narrow?

I've been thinking about why I'm interested in next generation fic, given my utter disinterest in tertiary* HP character fan fic. Is there a discernible difference? Scorpius, Albus Severus, James, Lily jr, Hugo, and Rose are for the most part, just names. There is a bare hint of character in the epilogue; we get more insight into Albus Severus than say, for example, Blaise. But I'm interested in their lives, in reading and writing fic about them because we know so much about their parents' lives. We can extrapolate a heck of a lot because of their family histories. That's where the attraction for next gen writing/reading is for me.

Thinking of that made me smile about fandom, because it seems to me that the next-gen loving group majority has created certain conventions for these kids. Well of course Albus Severus gets sorted into Slytherin and naturally Scorpius is a Gryffindor. AS/S is a given, Rose is pretty and popular, Lily is shy and sweet, etc. Now I've not read every next gen fic there is but these characterizations keep popping up. I'm not complaining; I think it's rather cool.

As for me, while I am interested in next gen fic, I want Harry or Draco or Snape or Hermione or Ron* to be a big part of the story. So yeah, I'm all about the cross-gen. Draco/Albus Severus or Harry/Scorpius gets me excited. So if you see any fics like that, direct them my way, please. :-)

I'm a deleter, I've come to learn.

I delete email, I delete entries, I delete journals, I delete story archive accounts (I've lost so much feedback this way, it makes me queasy to think of it), and I delete comments made by me.

I don't know why I do this. I just do.

I was thinking I'd repost my old recommendations. (They are somewhere on my hard drive!) I also thought it would be neat to create a 'best of' pairing rec list by year, rather than faves of all time. Each year of fics brings a new flavor due to canon changes (going by book canon only!) and so for me it's a bit more fun to compare stories by year.

So, I created an LJ account.

I've seriously been missing a few people on LJ who never made the move to IJ. I miss their posts, their discussions, and I went to LJ to surf around and check them out and it was SUCH a drag leaving anon comments, and who knows what I've been missing on the filtered stuff? I added people to my lj account who have blank journals here, and a few I duplicated because I know their journals are hotbeds of discussion.
